Branded Content Awards 2025 - Best Documentary over 5 minutes

Congratulations to BigStyle Media production company based in Dublin whose film for The National Basketball Association ‘Lecanvey Lakers’ originally awarded 'Best Documentary over 5 mins' was subsequently upgraded by the jury to GRAND PRIX in the Branded Content section.

Originally, the NBA approached BigStyle Media to create a short film which would represent Europe in their 2024 Films for Fans series and be premiered at the annual NBA All Star Weekend. The Films for Fans initiative aims to celebrate the global reach of the NBA and called on filmmakers to capture ”hidden basketball stories” around the world.

Lecanvey Lakers follows an opera composer living in the rural West Coast of Ireland, where the winters are harsh and isolating. He rallies together an unlikely gang of teammates for a local pick up basketball game that becomes a light in the community and their lives. A wonderful piece of film that truly displays the heart and soul of rural Ireland.

Judge Tony Cane-Honeysett: 'Lecanvey Lakers is a heartwarming documentary that offers a fascinating and unflinching look into life in a small Irish village, where harsh weather and isolation are part of daily life. Against this unexpected backdrop, it tells the story of a local basketball club that has brought the community together during long, cold winters. Alongside the interesting characters who make up the community, the documentary beautifully captures the dramatic landscapes that surround them, drawing the viewer effortlessly into this remote world'.

Rob De Boer: 'It means the absolute world to us to win the Grand Prix. When we started this project we had no idea how close it would make us to our community in Mayo and how much it would mean to everyone involved. We are delighted that the film is resonating with audiences at home and abroad. As a small Production Company, to win not only a gold award on our first entry to The Sharks, but the Grand Prix, is really an honour. It is really rewarding to have our work validated in such a prestigious way.'
